The Challenges
- Northern Tool + Equipment (NTE) is committed to cultivating new leadership from within. While this has proven to be a successful succession strategy, it also creates challenges.
- Managers who were previously individual contributors suddenly find themselves responsible for leading their peers
- The company sought to equip managers who are in a leadership role for the first time with the essential skills they need to get work done at NTE
The Solutions
- The Learning and Development department created the Management Basics Program (MBP), a leadership program targeted to new managers and supervisors
- The MBP empowers program participants to conduct coaching conversations, attract and hire the right people, lead through change and transition, and manage employee performance
- The Learning and Development department introduced InsideOut Coaching as an integral piece of this leadership program and the Leadership Boot Camp Program, a leadership program targeted to seasoned managers and directors
The Results
As a result of using InsideOut Coaching in its leadership programs, the company observed:
- An overall increase in productivity as program participants learn to problem solve without relying on their managers and supervisors
In addition, employees who completed the MBP:
- Gained a greater understanding of their current coaching effectiveness
- Increased the quality of coaching conversations with their direct reports
- Cultivated a new coaching relationship with a Leadership Boot Camp graduate to continue development and on-the-job growth
