Over 35 years ago, our Founder, Alan Fine, helped develop the GROW® Model, which set the standard establishing a simple process for coaching, goal setting, and implementation.
The GROW Model is a map of human decision-making. Developed nearly four decades ago, it provides a clear, repeatable structure for creating focus, reducing the interference that blocks performance, and improving results in any area of work or life.
At its core, the GROW Model is built on a straightforward premise: people perform better when they have clarity and focus about where they are going, an accurate read on current reality, a genuine set of options to choose from, and a specific commitment to action. Most performance problems are not caused by a lack of knowledge. They are caused by unclear goals, interference, perceived limited options, or the absence of real accountability. The GROW Model addresses each of these directly.
Because the model mirrors how people naturally think through problems when they are thinking clearly, it is easy to learn, practical to apply, and effective in real conversations, not just training room exercises. Organizations that implement GROW Coaching® find that leaders at every level gain a common language for performance conversations, and that language compounds over time into a shared operating culture.
GROW Coaching is practical training that helps leaders hold better conversations, unlock potential, and improve performance. By creating clarity around Goals, current Realities, possible Options, and the Way Forward, GROW helps people think more clearly, take ownership, and move into action.
The GROW framework guides both the coach and the person being coached through the four phases. Each phase helps the conversation stay focused, productive, and action-oriented, leading to clearer decisions and a concrete plan for follow-through.
Goal
Clarify what the person or team wants to achieve.
Reality
Explore what is happening now and what may be getting in the way.
Options
Identify possible paths, choices, or solutions.
Way Forward
Commit to the next step and create accountability for action.
The GROW Model works because it is a structured decision-making framework that mirrors natural problem-solving rather than imposing an artificial process on top of it.
The framework moves conversations away from circling the problem and toward clarity, choice, and action. By working through each phase, the person being coached identifies what matters, examines the current situation, explores possible paths, and commits to a practical next step. Because the answer comes from them rather than being handed to them, commitment increases, and follow-through becomes more likely.
What makes the GROW Model different from other coaching frameworks is the combination of structure and ownership. It gives leaders a practical, repeatable approach to improving performance that works across roles, levels, and organizational challenges, because it is built on how people actually think and solve problems when given the right conditions.
Most coaching solutions are built on a simple assumption: more knowledge leads to better results. If people just knew more, taking a class and reading a book would produce better outcomes. If knowledge alone drove performance, the gap between knowing and doing would not exist. The real challenge is not knowing what to do. It is doing what we know.
InsideOut Development operates from a different starting point. Imagine seeing every person on your team as capable and resourceful. That is the heart of the InsideOut Mindset. By empowering you to unlock your people’s full potential, we help you create a culture where success becomes inevitable.
We believe every person has the capacity to learn and perform at a higher level, and that the primary barrier to performance is interference, not ignorance. This belief, known as the InsideOut Mindset, is the foundation of our coaching program. It shapes how our programs are taught, applied, and sustained across organizations.
One of the most practical benefits of the GROW Model is what happens when an entire organization learns to use it. The GROW Model gives leaders and employees a consistent framework for performance conversations, so the method does not shift based on who is in the room or where the conversation is happening. That consistency is what allows coaching culture to scale.
Whether coaching a small team or a global enterprise with operations across multiple countries and cultures, cultural differences can be effectively embraced when a team shares a common approach and a shared language. That is the power of GROW Coaching. It gives leaders a consistent way to connect across differences, create clarity, and turn everyday conversations into measurable progress.
Watch as the GROW Model is applied in an organization.
At the center of the GROW® Model is the Performance Wheel, Alan Fine’s framework for understanding what must be present for people and organizations to achieve their goals. The four components are Knowledge, Focus, Faith, and Fire. Without all four present, breakthrough performance is not achievable. Most organizations focus almost exclusively on Knowledge, building training programs, adding certifications, and increasing content. But when Focus, Faith, or Fire are missing, Knowledge does not convert to results.
The GROW Model is a tool to create Focus and determine what might be missing. When leaders recognize that a team member or an organization is struggling due to unclear direction, lost confidence, or diminished drive, using the GROW Model provides a structured path back. By working through Goal, Reality, Options, and Way Forward, organizations can rebuild Focus, restore Faith, and reignite the Fire needed for sustained performance.
The Performance Wheel and the GROW Model work together as a diagnostic and action system, providing leaders with both a way to identify the problem and a method to address it.
Across industries and organizational structures, the results follow a consistent pattern: when GROW is implemented at scale, performance improves, coaching conversations become more effective, and the culture sustains the gains long after the initial training is complete.
